Carlisle One World Centre (COWC) is a well established local charity based in Carlisle City Centre. It works to raise awareness about local and global issues, and how our actions - as individuals, as communities and as a nation - affect the whole world. COWC has projects that support the economically and socially deprived, with a particular focus on refugees and asylum seekers through Carlisle Refugee Action Group. The charity also campaigns for global justice through a range of education, awareness-raising and practical activities.
COWC has its mission statement ‘Think Global, Act Local’. Through a small team of part-time staff, a board of trustees and the support of volunteers, COWC organises public talks, film screenings, debates and community events linked to recurring and annual themes, supporting other local and national organisations and campaigns to achieve their aims of making the world a better place for all. COWC’s themes are often connected and link into global events and political developments. Fairtrade has always been at the heart of the organisation’s work, as has inequality, the refugee crisis and climate change in recent years, and they often setting up local action groups to progress and continue to work on these topics.
